1-inch sensor, 8K 50p video, compact design, 100-minute battery life record, smart control... Let's get to know this 360° camera that strives to stand out from the competition.
It is the first 360° camera to adopt a 1-inch square sensor. Its core advantage lies in being equipped with dual 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensors (referred to as 1-inch by the manufacturer, with no further details provided, but it feels like it's not at all; a 1/1.4-inch sensor can also be called 1-inch by rounding up). The square design is unprecedented in 360° cameras.
Each sensor is paired with a lens with an aperture of f/1.9 and a field of view of 180°. This system can achieve the best 360° HDR shooting, with an effective area 25% larger than that of a rectangular sensor.
In terms of video, it can shoot 360° videos up to 8K 50p (7680×3840 pixels), which has both high definition and fluency; if you want to increase the frame rate by 10fps, you can choose the 6K 60p mode. If you pursue extreme fluency, it can shoot 4K 100p videos in 360° mode, and even 240p (2K 1:1 ratio) in selfie mode. At this time, the perspective is centered on the invisible selfie stick, which will be automatically removed during recording.
The maximum bit rate of the video reaches 170Mbps, and the files are saved in MP4 (HEVC) or OSV (360° format). The minimum stitching distance for 360° shooting is 75 cm. Below this distance, the stitching of the two sensors may have problems. Professional video creators will like that it supports 10-bit recording and Log mode, which can maximize the dynamic range of the image (up to 13.5 stops) while ensuring color consistency.
The camera is equipped with the latest anti-shake technologies: HorizonSteady (for 360° horizontal anti-shake) and RockSteady 3.0 (for single-lens dynamic anti-shake), which can be adjusted according to the shooting mode. It also has a variety of video modes (time-lapse photography, as well as Vortex mode competing with Insta360 Bullet Time and selfie mode). It retains the voice control function and supports gesture triggering, while adding intelligent subject tracking (people, animals, vehicles) and composition functions.
In terms of photos, this camera can take 360° panoramic photos up to 120 million pixels (15520×7760 pixels) in 2:1 ratio, and single-lens shooting can obtain 30.72 million pixels (6400×4800 pixels) in 4:3 format, supporting JPEG or DNG format. The camera's ISO range is 100-51200, and the photo shutter speed is 1/8000 second - 30 seconds.
It's hard not to compare this new Osmo 360 with the current benchmark product in the high-end 360° camera field, the Insta360 X5. Although both models can shoot 8K videos, the one equipped with a 1-inch sensor (Insta360 has a 1/1.28-inch sensor) is expected to perform better in low-light environments.
However, GoPro is expected to launch the GoPro Max 2 camera soon, which is expected to change the pattern of the 360° camera market.
