On July 15, 2025, Sony released the third-generation product of the RX1R series, the full-frame flagship of the Cyber-shot® series — RX1R III. The following is a summary of Sony RX1R III in terms of inheritance and innovation based on relevant information:
Aspects of Inheritance
Compact Body Design: Sony RX1R III continues the series' consistent compact body design, maintaining a very small and compact body. Compared with the previous generation, although there are some adjustments in subtle details, the overall body remains lightweight and portable, suitable for carrying around for shooting.
Classic Lens Configuration: Equipped with the classic fixed Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2 prime lens, which has excellent optical performance. It can give full play to the lens' outstanding optical characteristics and the ultimate performance of the image sensor, condensing clear and sharp high-quality images into the refined body.
Pursuit of High Image Quality: Inheriting the uncompromising high image quality design concept of the RX1R series, it is equipped with an approximately 61-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS back-illuminated image sensor and adopts Sony's new-generation BIONZ XR™ image processor. It offers performance advantages such as high resolution, high sensitivity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range, continuing the series' excellent performance in terms of image quality.
Aspects of Innovation
Upgrade of Imaging Technology: The surface of the image sensor is equipped with an anti-reflective (AR) coating, and the optical low-pass filter is removed, further improving the detail performance of images and achieving better image quality.
Improvement of Focusing Performance: Equipped with an AI intelligent chip, it has the function of real-time automatic subject recognition and continuous tracking focusing. Using subject recognition, it can accurately judge and predict subject movement, improving focusing performance in complex scenes. Human posture recognition can not only recognize eyes but also accurately judge the position of a person's body and head, enabling continuous tracking even when the subject's face is not visible, which is also applicable to video shooting. In addition, the Sony Cyber-shot® RX1R III is equipped with 693 phase-detection autofocus points, covering approximately 78% of the viewing range, further expanding the coverage of precise focusing.
More Abundant Functions: It has 12 built-in creative look filters, including the new FL2 and FL3 creative look filters. It can adjust hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and sharpness, making it convenient for creators to directly output photos and videos with high-grade texture without complicated post-processing, simplifying the creative process and further enhancing the joy of creation.
Optimization of Body Design: The body surface adopts a frosted (texture) texture process, which is more resistant to dirt and less likely to leave fingerprints and dust. At the same time, the dial and multi-interface (MI) hot shoe are embedded in the body, with a flat top surface design. The shape and texture of the grip part can provide a stable and comfortable holding feeling.
Integration of Environmental Protection Concepts: Adhering to Sony's "Road to Zero" environmental protection goal, the manufacturing facilities of Sony's imaging products including the Cyber-shot® RX1R III are powered by approximately 100% renewable energy. Moreover, the product packaging of RX1R III uses Sony's proprietary environmentally friendly hybrid materials instead of plastic, helping to achieve the vision of environmental zero load by 2050.
In addition, according to interviews with overseas media and Sony USA officials, in order to achieve extreme miniaturization, the RX1R III has made some changes, such as switching to a fixed screen, equipping a lower-resolution electronic viewfinder, not supporting 8K video recording, and canceling the independent video recording button. These are trade-offs made to integrate advanced technologies while maintaining the lightweight feature.
